What's going on?

Safer Internet Day is on Tuesday 10th February 2015, with the theme ‘Let’s create a better internet together’.  It offers the opportunity to focus on both the creative and positive aspects that children and young people are doing online, as well as how it supports their educational and social needs.

Many schools already have a variety of activities and equipment to support and promote using the internet safely, alongside a wide and diverse range of associations.  Outside the educational environment it is also important to support adults who may not be as technology minded, taking any confusion or misunderstanding away and making the internet a positive place.

Promoting Safer Internet Day is not just for one day for The Foster Care Co-operative.  Throughout the Year, we work with WISE KIDS, who provide training programmes and consultancy to promote positive and safe internet use for our staff and Foster Carers, as well as projects with our teenagers.

Dr Sangeet Bhullar, Founder and Director at WISE KIDS said; “The internet today offers great opportunities for education, learning, fun and networking.  However, many professionals and carers do not use the internet the same way that young people use it, and many are unsure about the information and services they may be accessing.  We are delighted to be supporting The Foster Care Co-operative through our training programmes, consultancy and research.  We provide an up-to-date picture of emerging technologies, the positive opportunities as well as the online risk young people face, and co-create solutions on how best to manage these.”

The internet is a staggering resource which enables children and young people to connect, communicate and be creative in a number of different ways, on a range of devices.  When using the internet all need to consider the impact of their online activity can have on themselves and other people, including content and contact.

Ultimately the day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.  It calls upon all of us to join together in helping create a better internet.

Ian Brazier, Executive Director of The Foster Care Co-operative said, “There are real advantages in maintaining an open dialogue with your children or foster family, about internet use.  The risk factors are often highlighted to us and yes we need to be vigilant, however, the internet and social media platforms should not be something to be feared.  There are so many learning and communication opportunities available to us all, not just the children in our care."
